Managing work and personal responsibilities at times can be difficult especially if you have no control over what tools and devices you are allowed to use. Fortunately for me in my new job, I can use my Mac alongside the Windows machine they provide. So here is how I divvy it up.
Work has decided to be a Google House and use Google Suites to manage that part of their infrastructure. What’s interesting is if you install their management onto an iPhone, it shuts down iCloud which I use for a lot of the tools and apps that I like. No Bueno. So, I do not have work email or calendar attached to my device.
On the positive note, since the company is Google as long as I am running Chrome browser, I can see and work on my work information. Since a lot of my job revolves around documentation on Google Suite, I handle most of that on my Mac to get access to various text utilities like Text Expander.
I use Google for both my work and home calendars. The problem is that since I don’t want to copy potential confidential work information to my Google home calendar and I cannot have my work calendar on my phone easily, I keep the separate, kinda. I create a Work Meeting event on my home calendar for every event I have at work. Since most of them are Google Meet events, I don’t need to be there. If there is a time I need to be at someplace, then I add the location to the Work Meeting event. Then I sync that to my devices, and I know I need to check my work calendar for more information.
I am an OmniFocus user. I like it, and it’s serves me well. I don’t want to give that up for work stuff. So I use OmniFocus for all my tasks work or otherwise. That’s nice. Now, how do I keep confidential work information out of my OmniFocus info, the thing is I use generic tasks and project names. I know the translations in my head and have a cheat sheet on Google. That way, I can use my system.
Write code on Project A
Work on documentation for Project B
Schedule meeting with Joe
Not Allowed to use personal systems
I’ve worked in places where I wasn’t able to use my personal system. That sucks but is nature of the beast at times. Ways I have done it in the past for tasks and such.
Paper It’s allowed most places. Paper is where I turn when IT is completely hamstringing me. They cannot stop you from writing notes.
Text Files Even on Windows, this works. Now, the text editor on basic Windows sucks, but hey, you can control the format.
** I used this a lot at my previous company. I had access to it from my work machine.
I know many people are not as lucky as I am with the ability to work on what they’d prefer to use. But there are ways around that if you look hard enough. This is my system for now. It may have to change if things change.
